Youth Accessible Opportunities

What is a youth accessible opportunity?

Youth accessible opportunities are designed to support young people (under 18 years of age) on Be Collective find safe and suitable volunteer roles. Youth accessible opportunities are perfect for engaging community minded youth/school students who are eager to build a social record. Common youth accessible opportunities include Duke of Edinburgh programs, environmental clean up days, junior referee roles, student advisory boards/councils, and much more.

Before you can create and advertise youth accessible opportunities, you need to ensure you have a verified group status. This is a requirement for engaging young people in volunteering through Be Collective. Not verified? No problem. It's easy to submit a form and any group can do it (Standard, Plus and Pro). See How do I verify my group?.

It’s important to note that young volunteers under 18 years of age on Be Collective

  • Can only join verified groups

  • May be asked to provide their specific age to join verified groups

  • Can only apply for opportunities deemed as youth accessible

  • Volunteers under 13 years of age can only create an account and volunteer on Be Collective if they are part of a family group

If you plan to engage volunteers who are under the age of 13, please reference the following articles:

Creating Youth Accessible Opportunities

To create and publish an opportunity that is suitable for volunteers under 18 years of age (also recognised as youth accessible) follow the steps outlined here: Create an opportunity - Step 1 Details

You will notice in the details section of the opportunity builder that you are asked to identify if the role is 'youth accessible'.

If your opportunity is suitable for volunteers under the age of 18, please select 'Yes' in this section. You can also choose to enter a minimum age requirement to further clarify appropriate age range. If you identify that your opportunity is suitable for volunteers under the age of 13, they will need guardian consent through a family group before they can apply.

Note: If you decide to engage young people through Be Collective, you will need to acknowledge and agree that your organisation has child safeguarding policies in place to protect volunteers under the age of 18. When you submit a legal acknowledgment of these policies (shown below), the acknowledgement will be documented and time stamped in your group's settings under 'Youth Volunteering'.

After acknowledging your your safeguarding policies, you will be able to proceed through the 5 step opportunity builder as normal. When young volunteers (under 18) log into Be Collective, they will be able to search, view and apply for your youth accessible opportunities if they fit the minimum age requirement.

How do young people access my youth accessible opportunities?

If you have group members that fit your youth accessible opportunity criteria, you can invite them to that opportunity directly by following the steps outlined here: how do I invite volunteers to an opportunity?

If you are recruiting new volunteers, simply publish the youth accessible opportunity and let the volunteers come to you. If a young volunteer (Under 18 years of age) is logged into their Be Collective account, their search bar will include a Youth accessible checkbox.

This filter is only visible to volunteers under the age of 18. They can choose to unselect this filter to view all opportunities on the platform, but will still only be able to apply for roles deemed suitable for their age. If they meet your opportunity criteria, they can view and apply for the advertised role.
